Construction starts on the Southwest BRT

This month, Southwest BRT construction starts on 14 Street S.W. The contractor is setting up their site office and construction material storage area just south of Glenmore Landing, with tree protection fencing in place.

Crews began work on the traffic light at Southland Drive/Bradbury Drive S.W. and 14 Street/Southland Drive S.W. intersections. Crews will install temporary traffic lights at 14 Street/90 Avenue S.W. intersection to accommodate the detours at the intersection, and installing permanent traffic lights at 14 Street/Heritage Drive S.W. intersection in the coming weeks.

    Glenmore Landing: 14 Street access

On March 5, 2018  the access lane from southbound 14 Street S.W. to the Glenmore Landing Shopping Centre will permanently close to traffic. Patrons can access the shopping centre using the two existing accesses on 90 Avenue, west of 14 Street S.W. The southbound access to the shopping centre was permitted on the condition that it would be removed by The City when it was required to improve the transportation infrastructure in the area.

The final designs for the pedestrian bridge, BRT station and access to the Glenmore Landing Shopping Centre can be found on the Southwest BRT website .

    Construction schedule

Construction south of Glenmore Trail will be happening in different areas throughout the construction seasons. To find out when crews will be working and where visit calgary.ca/swbrt .

What you can expect to see next:

Crews will install temporary traffic signals at the intersection of 14 Street S.W. and 90 Avenue S.W. so detours can be set up when crews start work on the underpass at 90 Avenue.

While we make every effort to avoid impacts to trees as a part of construction, crews will be removing trees this week, where necessary along the BRT route. When trees are impacted by construction, The City creates a tree compensation plan to replace the lost tree canopy. We’re working on the landscaping plan for the project, and working with The City’s Parks and Urban Forestry departments to develop compensation plans for the project. Visit
calgary.ca/swbrt for a list of where tree removal is required for construction.

Starting March 7, 2018, crews will start work on the detour at 14 Street and 90 Avenue S.W. This work requires lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. :

    March 8, 2018

    • Eastbound 90 avenue S.W., reduced to two lanes
    • Westbound 90 Avenue S.W., reduced to one lanes
    • Northbound 14 Street S.W., reduced to two lanes, just north of 90 Avenue S.W.

     March 9, 2018

    • Southbound 14 Street S.W., reduced to one lane, approaching 90 Avenue S.W.

    Upcoming work:

Later in March, crews will begin working on the 90 Avenue and 14 Street S.W. intersection. Crews will shift traffic lanes to make room for the work but all turning movements will be maintained. Visit the website to see the intersection design during construction this year.

The current bus stop on the north side of 90 Avenue S.W. will temporarily move just west of the first Glenmore Landing entrance. Once crews have finished the detour for the intersection, the bus stop will be moved back to its original location.
